Abstract

The last decades of the 19th century witnessed the growth of interest in Ethiopia among Russians. Thanks to the frequent trips of Russian people to Ethiopia, the volume of our knowledge about religion, customs, and the internal political situation in this country has constantly increased. Religious closeness led to a situation when the notion “Ethiopians” аnd the phrase «Our black Christian brothers» became almost synonymous. This period was also a time of the emergence of interest in Ethiopian Philology and in its languages — written Ge`ez and spoken Amharic — among Russian philologists. The aim of the article is to show the first steps in this direction and contribution of such linguists as Boris Dorn, Vasiliy Bolotov and Boris Turaev in this field.
