Abstract

Prince Albert’s voyage to Central Africa in 1909 played an important political role in relations between Belgium and Congo, which became a Belgian colony in 1908. Impressions that the future king had received during his expedition inspired him to draw a program of the political development of Congo with the main objective to “reconcile” the metropolis and colony. The range of king’s initiatives concerning social and humanitarian problems, that can be read in his travel notes and letters, makes actual the analysis of the ways of colonization and the role of the monarch in the process.
