Abstract

The article analyses the peculiarities of general Miguel Primo de Rivera’s dictatorship in Spain in 1923—1930. The policies of Primo de Rivera’s regime were aimed at the country’s modernization. Under his rule Spain achieved some successes: a certain degree of order was restored in the country, the war in Morocco was won, the economy flourished, labour strikes stopped. Primo de Rivera’s dictatorship did not amount to a totalitarian control over the citizens’ lives or harsh repressions against dissidents: it was not a fascist one, and can be characterized more correctly as a kind of a “development dictatorship”.
