Abstract

The paper is dedicated to a source-critical study of the Investigation File on the death of Tharevich Dmitry Ivanovich on the 15^th of May, 1591, in Uglich, to the reconstruction of its structure and original content. The author tries both to reconstruct the practice of investigation and its recording in the late 16^th century, and to use the analysis of watermarks and script in the study of the File. A hypothesis is put forth that the documents of the investigation which survive have never had a form of complete roll. They were preliminary materials upon which two other documents were to be compiled: a report to Tsar Fedor Ivanovich and the Sacred Synod of the 2th of June, 1591, and the records of the investigation of the Nagie family’s ‘treason’. The File which survives consists of drafts and fair copies which either had not been included into those two documents and kept as varia among other administrative records, or had served as a source for the fair copies of those two non-extant late 16^th-century rolls.
