Abstract

The article successively examines the historiographic concepts of the goals of writing both the Landnámabók (“The Book of Settlements”) and its second edition Hauksbók (“The Book of Hauk”). The main motive of Haukr Erlendsson, in our opinion, was the desire to create a more complete description of the initial period of Iceland’s history, which would look organically in his encyclopedic collection. On this basis, Haukr worked in several directions clearly traceable in his edition. The first was caused by a chronological gap between this edition and earlier versions and consisted in extending the descending genealogical lines to famous contemporaries of Haukr. The second was his own contribution to the selection and structuring of material and the invoking of additional sources not covered in previous editions of Landnámabók. These sources primarily include descriptions of legal procedures related to the occupation of new land holdings. Besides, Haukr used a more detailed information known to him (genealogical and topographical, as well as family fables and folklore plots), one way or another relating to his kinsmen. And in doing so, he additionally marked his authorship of this edition of Landnámabók.
