Abstract

The article examines the activity of the social and missionary Association “Pravoslavnoe Delo” in France during 1935—1939 in the context of history of the charity work in Russian Diaspora. The analysis is based on archive documents, publications in emigrant periodicals, as well as on memoires of contemporaries and biographic researches. The author describes the unique goals and ways of activity that characterize “Pravoslavnoe Delo”. It combined social, missionary and educational aims, a search of new methods of work that were theologically grounded by members of the Association as  ecclesiastic relations and common life of those who are involved in social work and those who receive their help. The article also presents the portraits of the main participants of “Pravoslavnoe Delo”, outstanding figures of culture of Russia Abroad, including mother Maria Skobtsova, Nikolay Berdyaev, Georgy Fedotov, Konstantin Motchulsky.
