Abstract

The article is dedicated to the life of the wife of the last Russian imperial envoy to Greece, E. P. Demidov, Sofya Illarionovna Demidova (nee Countess Vorontsova-Dashkova). As the daughter of a member of the State Council of Count Illarion Ivanovich Vorontsov-Dashkov, she was part of a narrow circle of close friends of Emperor Nikolai ΙΙ. In 1893, she married the heir to the richest Russian family of the mining industry of the Urals, the Prince of San Donato, Elim Pavlovich Demidov, who became envoy to Greece in 1912. After the Russian Revolution, the Demidov couple remained in Athens and devoted their lives to charity work for the benefit of Russian emigration into the country. Sophia Illariona led most of the compatriots' social organizations created by her husband and her. In 1919, the Union for Assistance to Russian Emigrants in Greece was created under her chairmanship. In 1927, she became Honorary Chairman of the Union of Russian Emigrants in Greece. She also headed the Greek branch of the Russian Red Cross Society. In 1921, she became Honorary Trustee of the Gymnasium in Thessaloniki and Chairwoman of the Ladies Committee at the Russian Gymnasium in Athens. From 1924 until her death in 1953, she was elected honorary chairman of the parish council of the Russian former embassy of the Holy Trinity Church in Athens. She died in Greece in 1953 and was buried at the former Russian Holy Trinity Church in Athens.
