Abstract

The author demonstrates that it is a specific feature of Scandinavian historiography of the Viking Age and early Middle Ages to ignore East-European and Byzantine influences first and foremost on Eastern Scandinavia by historians and especially historians of religion in spite of abundance of archaeological materials. The article discusses in details the causes of this historiographic situation and the results of the one-sided approaches to the problems of early history of Scandinavia. The author notes the awakening of interest to eastern connections of Scandinavian countries in the last decades of the 20th century and the appearance of a number of collections of articles that deal with this versatile theme.
