This issue is devoted to the political and cultural connections of peoples and states of Eastern Europe, first of all of Ancient Rus’. Most of the articles are based on the papers presented at the 30s Сonference in Memory of Vladimir Pashuto, whose centenary was celebrated in 2018 foreign policy of Ancient Rus’ was one of the most important spheres of his research and his fundamental book of the same name was published 50 years ago (it is reprinted in 2019).
Most of the articles included in the volume deal with the problems of interrelations of Eastern Slavs in pre-state period and Old Russian state with the North of Europe and Byzantium. The earliest contacts with Scandinavia are traces in the articles of Jo. Callmer, E. V. Litovskikh, later relations — in the articles of T. N. Jackson, V. М. Khusainov, A. S. Shchavelev. The Byzantine influences in various spheres are examined by Ju. A. Artamonov, Ju. Ja. Vin, S. A. Kozlov, A. S. Preobrazhenskiy, E. V. Pchelov. A group of papers discusses Byzantine colonies in the Crimea (N. A. Alekseenko, I. E. Ermolova, N. I. Khrapunov). The connections with the Orient are discussed by T. M. Kalinina and I. G. Konovalova. The volume also includes two reviews and the information about the 30th conference in memory of Vladimir Pashuto.
