Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of information about the trade voyages of Icelanders to Rus’ in the 10th — 13th centuries, preserved in Icelandic Family sagas, the Icelandic lawbook “Grágás”, and “Landnámabók” (“The Book of Settlements”). Trade contacts between Old Rus' and Scandinavia in the Middle Ages were frequent, although the voyages were expensive, difficult and long. The sources, due to their peculiarities, contain information about the travels of Icelanders to Rus’, but there is no information about similar voyages of Russian merchants. The sources confirm the main export items from the territory of Old Rus’: precious fabrics, slaves and (the most frequent) valuable furs. Fur trade is not only directly mentioned in the sources, but it is also reflected in the nicknames of the heroes of the family sagas and the “Book of Settlements”.
