Abstract

In the paper we deal with a process of perception, adoption and development of the iconographical method in the early research of an outstanding Russian historian M. I. Rostovtzeff. The essence of the study is a historiographical analysis of his published reports on archaeological excavations held in Pompeii in the period from 1882 to 1895. We underline the continuity of the young historian’s methodological seeking in relation to the one of his senior colleagues F. I. Buslaev and N. P. Kondakov. This allows us to make preliminary notes about a peculiar school in Russian humanities, which was born at the turn of the nineteenth century. The inseparability and complementarity of historical and art-historical problems in works of its brightest representatives are also emphasized in the paper.
