Abstract
The article dwells on modern identity discourse in a number of European countries, including Portugal, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark and Britain. There are the concepts and discursive practices under scrutiny which have become widespread while discussing the subject of identity in the academic community and at the national level. The paper examines role and place of the official policy in discourse, its relation to the state institutions’ steps on this path.
