Abstract

The oldest scribal description of the Nizhny Novgorod Volga region (1533) was introduced into scientific circulation almost two decades ago. The article considers the reasons why the attribution of this source as “the sotnaya dvortsovaya gramota of Uzolskaya and Bogoroditskaya volosts of Balakhna Uyezd” is erroneous. The analysis of the text reveals a number of direct and indirect evidence that not the “sotnaya gramota” but the scribe books of M. A. Zhedrinsky and Karp Ignatiev are the prototypes of the only 18th century list. The hypothesis is that the preserved text was preceded by a description of Balakhna, a grand ducal village, which main industry was salt-making. This allows one to interpret some unclear parts of the document. The manuscript was torn apart, apparently, back in the 16th century, due to the change in the status of Balakhna. The reconstruction of the course of scribal works and the analysis of the structure of scribe books allow a different look at the information available in the source about the territory that was previously considered as a palace volost by 1533. Avoiding the transfer of the later realities on the 1530s opens the possibility of a new understanding of the text. It results in characterization of the source contents within the framework of a grand duchys “service organization”, in which Uzolian wild-honey farmers are regarded as part of the “chashnicha put”, while peasants, salters and firewood suppliers for salt factories are regarded as the lower stratum of “servants under the court”. Although they are not defined this way in the scribal books of M. A. Zhedrinsky and Karp Ignatiev, their abovementioned qualities raise no doubt, especially in terms of genesis. The research expands our abilities to reconstruct the last stage of the grand duchy economy’s existence as a complex organization consisting of different structures, including “puti” and “servants under the court”. Some preservation of the mechanisms inherent in the “service organization” in the given territory, apparently, is due to the border position of the Nizhny Novgorod Uyezd.
