Abstract

The First World War, which required maximum efforts front and rear in all the belligerent countries, was especially characterized by the emergence of a new kind of struggle — that of information. “The war for hearts and minds” covered not only the front line, but very remote areas of all the major powers in the Member States, misinformation and outright lies were used to win over the allies. Also for the first time misinformation was used massively in order to break the morale of enemy troops. The basic institutions, methods and operations of “propaganda war” of 1914—1918 are described below.
