Abstract

The author of the article examines the impressions of the South African writers left by their journeys into the USSR. All three of them had different reasons why they wanted to visit the Soviet Union, that’s why their impressions also differ from each other. Alex La Guma, who has visited the Soviet Union several times, considered the USSR as a paradise for all people of all races and nations, especially in comparison with South Africa under apartheid system. Laurens van der Post, who came into the USSR in the 1960s independently, saw the Soviet Union as new imperia, which annexed neighboring lands and countries and made slaves of their people. Christopher Hope visited the USSR in 1989, under Perestroika, and found certain similarities between the Soviet society and the South Africans at that time: “society where the talk was all of reform, of change” and “less of it was to be seen”. Comparative study of impression of the foreigners who visited our country seems to be very useful because it helps us to understand new aspects of our history and look at ourselves from the outside.
