Abstract
The article is dedicated to the study of the events of the last decades of the 19th century, which resulted in establishing diplomatic relations between Russia and Ethiopia. A start was made by the Russian clergy, who saw many common features between the Russian and the Ethiopian churches and came forward with the idea of unification them. The more deep analysis made it clear that such unification was impossible. At the same time the articles on this theme, in which the Ethiopians were represented as «our black religious brothers» led to rise of sympathy to Ethiopia and its people as well as to desire to know more of them. Many travels of the Russians in Ethiopia, correspondence between the Emperors of both states, the support by Russia independence and territorial integrity of Ethiopia before and during the Italo-Ethiopian war 1895—1896, the arriving in Ethiopia Russian medics to help the wounded in this war — all this resulted in establishing at the end of 1897 diplomatic relation between two countries.
