Abstract
Before the establishment of official diplomatic relations between Somalia and Soviet Union in 1960, our country was engaged in contacts of different kinds and levels in Somalia, that has been overviewed in the article. Soviet Union took part in discussion of colonial borders in Africa after World War II, a very crucial problem for Somalia, divided between Britain, France and Italy. Then Soviet Union tried to strengthen its influence on the Horn of Africa while a new Somali Republic tried to benefit from economic and military assistance of Soviet Union. In 1960—1967 both countries were looking for the most appropriate and beneficial relations.
