Abstract
Drawing on documents from the Russian archives the author reconstructs the unknown history of publishing the "Autobiography" of Kwame Nkrumah, the first president of Ghana, in the USSR in 1961. It was the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who initiated the publication and conceived it to be timed to Nkrumah’s visit to the Soviet Union. Ideological Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party proposed to release his autobiography «as a digest» by cutting the original text. This episode well illustrates not uncommon clash of the two approaches in formulating the Soviet foreign policy — ideological (CC CPSU) and pragmatic (MID).
