Abstract

The Russian Red Cross Society (RRCS) actively working together with the state to solve humanitarian and social problems. RRCS’s international activities consisted of providing medical assistance to wounded and sick soldiers during armed conflicts and civilians caught in the combat zones. RRCS’s humanitarian actions played a large role in the history of Russia and other countries. The article describes the humanitarian mission of the Russian Red Cross Society during the Anglo-Boer War (1899—1902). In early 1900 the RRCS’s volunteer ambulance detachment arrived in Transvaal. Russian medics gave medical assistance to thousands of soldiers (both Boers and British) and civilians. The selfless and heroic work of these volunteers saved their patients’ lives and restored their health.
