Abstract

Einhard is widely known as the author of The Life of Charlemagne. Even experts know little about his other work. The “Translation and Miracles of Saints Marcellinus and Peter” was created c. 830. This is a very original, complexly constructed work that has no direct analogues in the entire previous early medieval literary tradition, which, in turn, gave birth to a new genre. It is based on the story of how Einhard’s men in Rome found the relics of two revered saints, how these relics made a long journey to their new homeland — the city of Seligenstadt, and what miracles occurred in Francia with their appearance. The superbly written text solved several problems at once: it helped to form the cult of Saints Marcellinus and Peter and connected it with Einhard; gave the monastic community of Seligenstadt a high-quality memorial basis for maintaining the cult; discredited the claims of the monastery of St. Medard to possess the authentic relics of Marcellinus and Peter; exhorted the sovereign and his entourage to immediately turn to correcting morals. All this, ultimately, worked to achieve the author’s main goal — the organization of personal salvation, which seemed to him possible only through collective salvation.
