Abstract

The article focuses on the problem of the spread of typhus among soldiers and officers of the British army who participated in the war on the Iberian Peninsula in the winter of 1808—1809. As sources were used notes and reports from British doctors, as well as memoirs and letters from British soldiers who suffered during the winter retreat of the British army under the command of General Sir John Moore. Based on a comparative analysis of sources are examined the history of the spread of febrile illness in the British army, the clinical picture of the disease and methods of treating typhus. It was revealed that in the texts of British doctors who described the symptoms of typhus in 1809 the names of the disease differ, but the general symptoms indicate typhus. In addition, a review of the medical reports of British surgeons demonstrated differences in the way typhus was treated: calomel and tincture of opium were the main medicines; also bloodletting and dousing with cold or hot water were often practiced.
