The Russian historians of the A. V. Suvorov's Italian campaign often discuss the Austrians’ meanness in relation to this general and Austrians’ breach of allied obligations towards Paul I. These ideas are based on Suvorov’s numerous complaints about the Viennese military council Gofkriegsrat, which did not allow him to realize his plans of the allied forces offensive to France and of restoring the deposed king in Piedmont. Then Gofkriegsrat insisted to send Suvorov with his troops to Switzerland, where the Russian corps of A. M. Rimsky-Korsakov found himself alone in front of the French army of A. Massena. A lot of documents about this campaign (some of them are published) allow us to analyze the details of the dialogue between the Austrian and Russian sides. In particular, it is obvious that even in Vienna, Emperor Franz II outlined for Suvorov the priority for capturing of the Northern Italia fortresses before an attack on French territory. Moreover, it is not entirely clear whether Franz II agreed with Suvorov on this offensive. It is obvious that Suvorov, with the support of Paul I, intended to restore the king of Piedmont to the throne. Vienna did not really support this decision, however, apparently, this topic was also not agreed upon in advance. Obviously, the decision of Franz II to send Suvorov to Switzerland was not sudden for the commander, however, he hoped in vain that his opinion would be taken into account. Moreover, Emperor Paul I, expressing full solidarity with Suvorov’s decisions, did not put pressure on Vienna and, in general, allowed the situation to develop by inertia.
