Abstract

This publication presents the first Russian translation of a letter from William Laud (7 October 1573 — 10 January 1645), Bishop of Bath and Wales, to Sir John Scudamore (22 March 1601 — 19 May 1671), with whom he was associated through friendship and like-mindedness in matters of religion. The letter was a response from Laud to Scudamore's enquiry as to the moral justification for retaining the right to tithe from church lands that his ancestor Sir John Scudamore (c. 1486—1571) had acquired during the reign of Henry VIII. The future Archbishop of Canterbury offers a response reflecting aspects of the controversy surrounding the nature and practice of tithing in the seventeenth century, which is briefly reviewed in the introductory article. The translation of the letter is accompanied by a translation of Canon 45 of the Canons of the Church of Ireland, adopted in 1634 and bearing clear traces of Laudian theology. The authors consider the debate about the nature of the institution of the tithe as one of the instruments of confessional identification, in the context of the concept of the “contested identity” of the Church of England.
