Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the biography of the Ottoman cartographer Piri Reis, his scientific works, such as maps and Kitab-I Bahriye, as well as their role in the formation of seamanship in the studied period. The author analyzes the influence of Piri Reis' activities on the formation of the Ottoman Empire as a powerful Maritime power in the XVI century. The conclusion drawn in this article is that Piri Reis did a tremendous job in creating maps and Kitab-i Bahriye, and his contribution to the seamanship, the expansion of the territory of the Ottoman Empire, as well as in its formation as one of the most powerful Maritime powers of the time, is invaluable.
