Abstract

The article is devoted to the reconstruction of relations between the first general chief of police of Saint Petersburg A. M. Devieir and A. D. Menshikov on the basis of a complex of their letters 1718—1727. The author defines issues which Devieir wrote Menshikov on and shows different aspects of their formal and informal relationships. The thesis established in historiography about Devieir’s and Menshikov’s long-standing hostility, which led to a political trial known in historical science as the “case of Devieir-Tolstoy” is also had doubts. As a result, it is concluded that both Devier and Menshikov are interested in maintaining constant contact with each other.
