Abstract

The article is devoted to the views of soviet researchers of the 1920s — 1930s. on the social organization of the nomads of the Eurasian steppes, with a focus on the interpretation of the concept of “rod” (clan). The main attention is drawn to the thoughts of the Irkutsk researcher N. N. Koz’min, viewed through the prism of polemics with opponents, the main of which he himself saw other representatives of the pre-revolutionary school were W. Barthold and B. Ya. Vladimirtsov. The article attempts to show that initially the views of N. N. Koz’min were quite close to the views on social processes among nomads by such researchers as W. Radloff and H. Vámbéry, based of ethnographical material and finally became the basis for studying the social history of nomadism. Most important in the position of N. N. Koz’min was the perception of nomadic unions as politically organized units. That, in turn, intends to consider ethnic and social processes in nomadic societies as closely related and inextricable.
