Abstract

The article is devoted to the assessments and prospects of change of the Russian-Iranian border to the East of the Caspian Sea, as they were seen by Imperial military and civil administrators in the late 19th — early 20th centuries. It is suggested that immediately after the demarcation during the accession of Turkmen lands to the Russian Empire, in the 1880s — 1890s, it becomes the subject of thorough study by military and civilian officials, expressing various considerations regarding its reasonableness. However, in the first decades of the XX century, the issue of the formal border with Iran recedes into the background before the prospect of further penetration into the Northern Iran in economy, colonization, culture and, ultimately, politics.
