Abstract

From the beginning of the World War II, the Hungarian political elite, headed for revising the Trianon Peace Treaty, was getting more clearly aware of the commonality in aspirations of the USSR and Hungary, aimed at the dismemberment of the Great Romania, one of the most problematic products of the Versailles system. The annexation of Bessarabia by the USSR in June 1940 set a precedent, which was used by the Horthy regime which could begin to implement its own irredentist plans towards Romania. In early July the Soviet Union in the course of bilateral contacts supported the Hungarian claims on Transylvania. The rise of the Soviet influence in Hungary was a challenge for Germany. Berlin has made a response move, setting by the Second Vienna Arbitration on August 30, 1940, the balance of powers in the Danube-Carpathian Region in the interests of Nazi Germany.
