Abstract

The Sudeten crisis initiated by Hitler in September 1938 forced France to reconsider its safety policy. This article deals with the consideration of major directions of this search during the Czechoslovak crisis (from September 1938 to March 1939): the analysis of forethoughts and interests by which the “Munich” policy of appeasement towards Germany was motivated. France along with Great Britain tried to avoid war by switching the revisionists of the Versailles system from open aggression to diplomatic bargaining through the creation of the new European directory. The study results are based on the analysis of published materials from the archives of French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
