The article provides a comparative analysis of the political effects of the Treaty of Versailles and the Treaty of Saint-Germain 1919. Both treaties were signed with the countries defeated in the World War I: Germany and Austria. Both formed the basis of the Versailles international system after the World War I. The author concludes that both treaties had both positive and negative values. The undoubted benefits they brought to the states whose independence was recognized by the treaties: to Poland, Czechoslovakia, Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes as well as to the states recognized de facto: to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The Treaty of Saint-Germain had also positive value. It formed the basis of the Austrian national state. At the same time the Treaty of Versailles led to the death both Weimar and Austrian republics. It contained the seed of World War II.
