Abstract
The article investigates the impact of the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the ensuing Civil War on the emigration from Russia. The authors show the extent of polarization in the Russian society after the Revolution of 1917. The authors also track the routes of the exodus from Russia and reveal the features of the legal status of Russian émigrés as well as the phenomenon of extraterritorial “Russia Abroad”. The subject matter of the study covers the mechanisms of maintaining the national identity in the alien ethnic environment created by Foreign Russia in 1920s — 1930s. Because of the complexity of the phenomenon under scrutiny, the integrated, systematic, and cross-disciplinary approach with the application of some elements of anthropological methods has been required. The authors come to the conclusion that the creation of “the buffer environment” (i.e. its own political, social, educational, information, and cultural space) slowed down the integration of Russian émigrés into the host communities and led to an original adaptation model. The ethnical Russians, who had been the state-building ethnos in the Russian Empire, tolerant towards other ethnicities and poorly consolidated, showed an unprecedented will to self-organization in emigration. The results of the research are of practical importance for improvement of migration and national policy of the Russian Federation.
