Abstract
The article is a study of a court ritual of the New Year’s gifts exchange between Queen Elizabeth I of England and her Catholic nobles. A public ceremony of gifts exchange helped Catholics who were allowed to participate to show their families’ loyalty to the monarch, as well as their closeness to her, that is, their belonging to a select group of courtiers who enjoyed Elizabeth’s trust. The study of the New Year gifts’ rolls makes it possible to discover the criteria for the inclusion / exclusion of Catholic participants, to find groups of Catholic families thought to be loyal and trustworthy, always, or just episodically, and types of gifts, which demonstrated a degree of closeness to the Queen (only the courtiers could present her with items of cloth or jewels to be worn on her body). Women played an important role in the ritual itself and in building of the relationship based on trust. At a female monarch’s court, ladies and maids who served her were the most trusted persons. The position of the English Catholic elite in the 16th century was even more precarious because Catholic women, in fact, were denied access to this circle of the Queen’s trusted friends.
