Abstract
The article focuses on the course of events on the eve of the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, describing preparations for and attempts to boycott the games. It analyses global political threats to the Olympic movement that arose when preparations for the XI Olympic games were under way and which point to the double role of sport in Nazi-Germany: It served as an effective means for preparing for the future war and the propagandistic backing of the racial theory, state-driven anti-Semitism and militarization of the Third Reich. The authors expose attempts to boycott the games, as well as the joint international struggle of various social groups to organize an alternative Olympiad in Barcelona. The article demonstrates the Nazi-leaderships’ ploy to deceive the International Olympic Committee and the subjective factors that affected the decision to refrain from boycotting the Berlin games. It discusses the implications resulting from the games and the failed boycott with regards to Nazi Germany’s preparations for WWII and concludes that the lessons from the Berlin Olympics are particularly important in the context of “early warning systems” of emerging forms of racism and xenophobia at the state-level.
