Abstract
Gera Ivanovna Potekhina (1926—1979) was the daughter of the first Director of the Africa Institute Ivan Potekhin. She grew up in a family where everything was connected with Africa, was personally acquainted with famous foreign Africanists, with prominent African artists. She was the connecting link between the first and second generations of our Africanists, vividly talking about the situation in her father's house, and its guests. She was the world's first to teach a University course on the history of the literatures of Black Africa. For students-historians she read a unique course: “African literature as a historical source”. Such view on African literature was absolutely new both for studies on African literatures and African history sources.
