In this publication the memoirs of the Catholic priest of the Eastern rite Alexander Deibner (1899—1946?) are introduced into the scientific circulation. He can be called one of the most controversial and tragic figures in the history of Russian Catholicism of the pre-war period. In the years 1928—1932 Deibner was an employee of the papal commission “Pro Russia”, whose president during this period was an influential Jesuit, Bishop Michel d’Herbigny. In 1932 Deibner suddenly left Rome, in connection with which he was accused of collaborating with Soviet special services and kidnapping a number of documents from the commission “Pro Russia”. This was one of the reasons for the resignation and subsequent removal from Rome of M. d’Erbigny. “Deibner’s case” was actively discussed in the press, especially the Polish one and caused serious upheavals in the Vatican circles. The published memoirs were written Deibner in 1932—1934, in the midst of dramatic events and represent an attempt to justify their actions. They contain details from the use of the Vatican Commission “Pro Russia”, from the life of the European and Moscow Bolshevik elite and provide an opportunity to compile a psychological portrait of their author.
