Abstract
The article discusses a sociological method of social network analysis as applied to historical material. Special attention is paid to the article by Padgett and Ansell on the rise of Medici family in Florence which opened perspectives of the application of this method in historical studies. The works by K. Lewin and N. Elias are discussed as methodological basis. The study of R. Collins is used as an example of the application of this method in the sphere of the history of ideas. The Republic of Letters is discussed as one of the most appropriate objects of study using this method. Modern approaches to social network analysis are analyzed. The limits of the method of social network analysis in history are defined.
