Abstract
This paper offers an overview on crowdsourcing projects aimed to preserve and study cultural heritage. It explains what is crowdsourcing, why and how galleries, libraries, archives, and museums can apply it. It examines what are the motivations of the volunteers to participate in such projects. The paper focuses on the potential challenges in building on the work of a volunteering community and, based on the examination of a number of initiatives, suggests some basic principles of creating a successful project for crowdsourcing cultural heritage.
