Abstract

The article is devoted to the problem of authorship of graffiti on the walls of Old Rus churches. The author analyzes a number of epigraphic sources which indicate somehow if the person mentioned in the inscription is at the same time its author, or not. The author finds several examples of so-called “autograph” graffiti where the name mentioned does not belong to the real creator of the inscription. Some graffiti which contain prayers demonstrate us the same discrepancy. This leads to a reconsideration of the purposes of “autograph” and “prayer” graffiti.
