Abstract
The aim of the present article is to characterize the historical records data bank, which was created by Soviet government establishments as a part of their control and regulation of religion. The main purpose of the research is to analyze the potential capacity of these sources to be used for the reconstruction of the history of a believing community, Evangelical Baptist Christians’ daily lifestyle, during the post-war period (the 1940s—1960s). The evidence from the Tambov Region of Russia will be treated. Are the extant materials of the City Religion Council complete? Do they allow researchers to perform an all-encompassing and in-depth study of different problems in their academic pursuits? Can the materials that emerged during the cult-law implementation period help a researcher to study more specific issues, such as typical patterns of everyday life of religious minorities in the Soviet reality? If the informative capabilities of the materials prove to be limited, which sources, to what extent and in which correlation with the archival records, can fill the gap in the knowledge of the research subject?
