Abstract

It has been a feature of Russo-British relations in the first half of the 19th century that despite misunderstandings, suspicions, and outright rupture in the sphere of politics and diplomacy there has been an undercurrent of sympathy in the cultural and personal spheres. The reign of Alexander the First represent a crucial period of transition in the patterns of Russo-British intercourse that was given undoubted momentum by the military alliance during the Napoleonic Wars. The economic and cultural contacts between two nations were an integral part of Russia’s major turn towards Western Europe during the reign of Alexander the Second and contributed greatly to the fact that Russian society was better prepared for his reforms.
