Abstract
The article deals with biography of De Valera, tremendous statesman of twentieth century Ireland, who was the prime minister and the president of the country and was named by his fellow-citizens as “the Irishman № 1”. The main part of the twentieth century irish history is closely connected with him. It is shown the significance of De Valera’s part in creation and developing of independent Irish state, its domestic and international policy and strengthening the irish sovereignity. At the same time it is mentioned the contradictions in his political activity and different attitude to significance of De Valera in the modern historiography.
