Abstract
The article is about the political, theological and cultural dialogue between papal Rome and imperial Constantinople. The period of 6th — 8th centuries was the time of Byzantine domination in Rome, and a number of Roman frescoes belong to this period. Their style and iconography show the theological and political polemics as well as the cultural influence of early Byzantine art on the local Roman tradition. Meanwhile. art objects are insufficiently used as sources for the study of relations between Rome and Constantinople in the Early Middle Ages and for the history of iconoclasm. The author comes to the conclusion that her approach may be also valuable for better understanding of key issues of that period of history as a whole.
