Abstract
The article analyzes some early letters of the Dutch humanist Erasmus Roterodami dated 1487—1488. The Epistles contain information about a little-known side of Erasmus’ life in the first year of his stay in the monastery of Steyn — namely, his passionate emotions associated with Servatius Roger, his fellow countryman and the young monk of the same monastery. The letters allow the authors to put the question of the role of rhetorical standards in describing the emotional experiences as well as to analyze Erasmus’ views on friendship, love, regulations of everyday life and their interrelations. The authors consider possibilities of interpreting these texts as some samples of epistolary art discussing at the same time the legitimacy of attempts to detect some kind of homosexual behavior patterns in Erasmus’ correspondence. The interpretation of the above letters in the context of the sentimental masculine friendship phenomenon inherent in the medieval monastic culture and tradition of devotio moderna is being given ground in the issue.
