Abstract
The paper identifies the main trends in the history of conservatism as a movement of social and political thought of imperial Russia, with a focus on the evolution of assessments the conservatism and late Slavophilism in the second half of XIX century. The author shows that in Soviet historiography formed an opinion about conservatism as a combination of retrograde ideas. Only in the 1990s it was written a serious works, which deals with various aspects of the history of Russian conservatism and the problems faced by the Conservatives in the last days of the Russian empire, based on a large documentary material. These works clearly manifested the desire of scientists to create an objective history of relying on academic, rigorous compliance with a full scientific study, regardless of ideological formulas and political pressure. This academic approach is preserved in most centers of historical science, as well as in leading scientific journals. However, in the past two decades by a number of Russian researchers outlined apologetic line in the image of Russian conservatism, raises the question of the extent to which it is dictated by a desire to free the science of history from the previously developed ideological accretions, and to what extent — the desire to create new parameters "correctness" at understanding of the processes taking place, so — the story of a new subject of indoctrination.
