Abstract
The paper proposes a method of analysis of historical reality on the basis of allocation of functional niches in political structures — with the example of Bolshevism in 1917 and informal movements 1987—1988 (group «Community»). The author puts forward a hypothesis, according to which similar niches can stand out not only in political but also in all structures of society. Identification and systematization of functional niches at the intersection of mental, power and economic spheres, and within each of them allows to create a complete system of coordinates of the studied society, which is an important task for historical science.
