Abstract
The Article is devoted to comparative Analysis of symbolic national Figures of Russia and Germany — “German Michel” and “Cossack”, how they were pictured on Post-cards in the Period of the First World War. The Role of a Post-card is studied as one of the most important means of visual Propaganda in war years. A serious retardation of Russia from Germany is pointed out both in relation of Production and Promulgation of Post-cards and Meaning of their propagandist functions. Comparison of auto- and heterosteriotypes of “Michel” and “Cossack” in German and Russian Post-cards accordingly leads to Conclusion about higher Degree of Maturity of German National Identity in Contrast with Russian. This Thesis is strengthened by a Character of Responses of Senders and Receivers of Post-Cards since the latter give unique possibility of exploring immediate contemporary Reaction on visual Propaganda during the First World War.
