Abstract
This Chapter deals with the history of Russian Orthodoxy in the XVIIth century: the role of the Russian Church as guardian of religious and national identity in the era of the time of Troubles (Smuta), the conflict between the Patriarchal and Imperial power in the middle of the XVII century, the Church reforms of Patriarch Nikon and the Russian Church schism, which followed.
