Abstract
The studies in the field of sociology of religion, carried out in Russia for the past twenty years, facilitate the recognition and research into the complex developments within the Russian Orthodox Church in the post-Soviet era. The growing numbers of faithful is not the only feature of the present religious revival; it is also characterized by the ambivalent attitude towards the Church practices which, while keeping the traditional form, not always retain their meaning.
