Abstract
The present paper deals with epic elements in John Scylitzas’ historical narrative about defeating the Pechenegs by Patricius John Alacasseus during the Balkan campaign of Prince Svyatoslav. The special attention is paid to identifying on the basis of Byzantine historiography the reminiscences of the lost “heroic novels” that have been very popular in Byzantium after military victories of Nicephor II Phocas and John I Tzimisces and sometimes used by the court chroniclers to depict the heroic portraits of any ruling emperors and nobles and their deeds in the struggles against foreigners.
