Abstract
The article deals with the problems of organization of the material and symbolic topography of Rome in the 12th century with an emphasis on the role of the liturgy and the papal building program of the first half of the century. It is shown that the spatial arrangement of new churches mostly ignored the existing system of “papal” liturgical space of the city. Author suggests that the evolution of the sacred space in the first half of the 12th century was determined by the evolution of the papacy as a political institution and the growth of social and political influence of the College of Cardinals.
